The goal of the workshop is to draw out the writing strengths of each student and set a realistic timeline of completing a full length book. Along with lectures on the fundamentals of writing and getting published, there will be in class exercises, positive group critique and required reading to be determined.

Beyond working towards a publishable book, you'll learn about marketing, dealing with agents and publishers and the etiquette of the publishing industry.

Online video lectures are Mondays, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. All students will spend time each week working one on one with Tony DuShane outside of class hours as well as with each other in a peer group environment.

Must have a Google+ account. All classes are interactive since it will be set up as a video conference call.

Tony DuShane is the author of Confessions of a Teenage Jesus Jerk (Soft Skull Press 2010). He's a columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle and an entertainment writer for SFGate.com. Since 2002 he has hosted the literary talk show, Drinks with Tony, featuring hundreds of writers including David Sedaris, Chuck Klosterman, Chuck Palahniuk, James Ellroy, Irvine Welsh, Miranda July and William T. Vollmann.

His articles and essays have been published in many anthologies and publications including Mother Jones, The Believer, The Rumpus and The Bold Italic. He also writes for television and film.

The best students of the class will have a chance for their work to be featured in the literary anthology Portion Control and will be booked for a public reading. They will also have a chance to discuss their work on Radio Valencia, 87.9FM on Drinks with Tony.
