MONDAYS, April 20th – May 18th 2026 | Writing the novel is not complicated, but it’s not easy. I’m here to guide you through the process.
We’ll go over all aspects of craft including character development, plot progression, voice, plot devices, and genre. All genres welcome and encouraged.
There will be daily and weekly work to reach your goals to achieve the best novel you’re meant to write. We’ll also read and discuss your work as a group.
What’s the formula to write a novel? SIT and WRITE.
But there’s more to it than that. It’s getting over fear, embracing vulnerability, understanding what every author faces when they encounter the blank page, and understanding that the magic isn’t a potion to miraculously write the great novel, it’s the esoteric journey of battling yourself as a novelist as well as staying out of the way of your characters when they show themselves to you. It’s a spiritual practice with great rewards even before getting that juicy book deal or film adaptation, yet we also want those outcomes in our journey.
We’ll work on your novel that you’ll either start or continue working on in class and we’ll discuss how to live the novel life and embrace the process.

Previous students have received major book deals including six figure book deals. I love it when students become bigger authors than me, let’s create more.
Tony DuShane is the author of Confessions of a Teenage Jesus Jerk (Soft Skull Press). He adapted the novel for director Eric Stoltz (Amazon Prime) and is now available on DVD and other streaming platforms. He also ghostwrites, story develops novels and screenplays, is shopping his next novel, teaches screenwriting at UCLA Extension, and he continues reading In Search of Lost Time while wondering if he’s losing valuable time reading Marcel Proust.
